'Now that you are here,

The games start is drawing near.

Look to the front door,

did you notice it before?'

If I wasn’t freaked out before I was now. I already knew that we were in trouble, but I didn’t realize just how much trouble we were actually in until now. Giving each other a fearful look we headed towards the front door with hesitant steps. Waiting for us on the carpet in front of the door was a single white note folded in half. Written in the same blood red color as the previous message was a lone sentence:

'You should have told me you wanted to play.'

Roam with me, come down to where all of the others fell.

Get lost in the dark to find yourself.

Just remember what I said, no it isn’t over yet.

This is bad, very, very, bad. Not only are we trapped in a mansion in the middle of nowhere, but now it seems like that there is someone else here as well. And that someone is going to be nothing but trouble if the messages are anything to go by. The sound of a child’s laughter broke me out of my revere. Sharply turning around I was shocked to find a little girl no older then twelve standing about a dozen or so feet behind us. She was wearing a light blue sundress and was barefoot. She also had long jet black hair put up in twin tails, pale almost white skin and red eyes. Despite my brain telling me to run as far away as possible, I couldn’t move an inch while looking at the laughing child. After she stopped laughing she started to speak.

Hehehe~ It’s been a while since I last had guests. And there are two of you, how fun.

“W-w-who are you? What do you want?”

Oh, how rude of me~. You can call me Scarlet. As for what I want, I want to play.

“Play? What do you mean play?”

“Didn’t you know? Anyone who enters this place will die. And since I’ve been here for a very long time I entertain myself by playing with those who are trapped. It’s quite fun to see how many ways I can come up with to kill them~. ”

“W-Wha..”

What’s wrong? You seem surprised. Can’t you see the death in my eyes? Hehe~ You two are going to be loads of fun. I can’t wait to see your faces twisted in fear and despair just before you die. Hehehehe~.

She then disappeared into thin air, but her maniacal laughter continued to ring in my ears. None of us dared to move as the silence enveloped us once again. To be completely honest I was terrified, but somehow it didn’t show as much as I thought it would. We stayed like that for what felt like a few minutes until finally my friend decided to speak up. That in turn made me look at him, and I was shocked to see that his expression was sad and guilt ridden.

“I’m sorry. It’s my fault we’re in this mess now.”

“It’s not just you, I’m the idiot who actually agreed to this. It’s both our faults, so don’t worry about it too much. Ok?”

“But-”

“No buts, what happened, happened. Now we have to figure a way out of this place.  ”

“How? That girl said it would be impossible.”

“We’ll never know until we try. So let’s give it a shot, who knows we might get lucky and find a way out.”

“Ok. Let’s do it.”

From that point on we were determined to get out of this house alive, but before we could do anymore exploring we noticed that it was almost completely dark outside and that it was increasingly difficult to see. So we decided to camp out in one of the rooms that we found and continue our search in the morning. The next day we continued our search. First we finished exploring the ground floor only to find nothing of interest and a lot of locked doors. After that we made our way up the stairs to the first floor. Once we made it to the top of the staircase, I had a foreboding feeling that this is whit out a shadow of a doubt going to end badly. The first floor was similar to the ground floor, three hallways branching out with another staircase leading to the second floor on our right. But unlike the previous level this one was somehow darker. That didn’t make sense seeing as how there was the same amount of windows as before.  This time we took the hallway that was right in front of us. It was surprisingly short with only one door at the end.

Say you have a little faith in me,

Opening the door we were given a start when our reflections greeted back. A mirror, we were looking at a mirror. Glancing around the room quickly I saw that it was like one of those mirror mazes you would find in amusement parks only much more creepy. I saw our reflections on several mirrors going in different directions, it was very unnerving. I could also spot several intricately carved pillars here and there, while the place was illuminated by dark blue carnival lights. I was about to turn around and leave when I spotted a piece of paper on the ground in front of one of the mirrors.

“What are you doing?”

“It’s another note.”

“What does it say?”

'The stage has been set.

The conditions met.

Tik-tok-tik-tok

How far will you get'

I looked up from the note at the sound of a door being locked, and sure enough the door was indeed closed. To my side my friend was also staring at it in confusion… He must have entered the room to look at the note himself while I was reading it. Remembering the contents of the message I quickly ran to the door, only to find that it won’t budge, it was locked.

“Damn it, no use we’re locked in.”

“Great, just great. Now what are we supposed to do?”

“Find a way out, what else.”

just close your eyes and let me lead, follow me home.

With that we picked a random direction and headed deeper into the maze. It was more disorientating then I imagined. Not even 10 steps in and I already walked into a mirror. Needles to say my dear friend was in hysterics, how embarrassing… But his amusement didn’t last for very long, and when he ran face first into one I made sure to return the favor. As we continued to walk I couldn’t tell if we were making any progress or if we were just going in circles, it really was frustrating. After a while we noticed the first change in our surroundings- some of the mirrors were cracked on one path, while the others were intact. Briefly discussing whether or not we should go along the path that had the damaged mirrors, we took a gamble and went with that one. The farther we went the more mirrors were broken, and soon there wasn’t an intact one in sight there were even shards of varying sizes laying on the ground.
Eventually we made it to the end of the corridor
where a pure white double-door with golden accents was waiting for us. Grasping the handles we tried to open it and found that it was unlocked. Squinting at the sudden change in lighting we walked in.

It was an old looking library. The walls were lined with shelfs filled to the brim with books of all kinds of colors and sizes. Some of them looked really old bound with leather and with faded titles, others looked brand new. There were three circular tables in the center, one of them was covered with pieces of paper, books and writing utensils. The floors seemed to be made of a type of dark wood that creaked with every step we took as we made our way further in.

We approached the cluttered table with a bit of caution and, with a quick glance between each other, started looking through the piles of paper. There were several hand written poems and a few drawings that look to have been made by children, but most of it was blank.

“Hey, I think I found something…”

“What is it?”

“It’s a diary of some sort, listen to this-”

‘It’s been a few days since I’ve seen mother around the house and I’m starting to get worried. Father said that she had to go on an important trip and won’t be back for a while. I want to believe him I really do, but I know mother wouldn’t just up and leave like that. She would have said something, or at the very least would’ve sent a letter saying she’s alright. That’s not the only thing I’m worried about- father started acting strangely. First he forbade me to go to one of the rooms on the first floor, saying that he’s working on something that’s not for children. After that he started getting this faraway look on his face, like he’s not really there.’

“Hmmm, that sounds a bit disturbing. Do you think it has something to do with what’s going on now?”

“I don’t know, maybe.”

“Is there anything else in there that might give us a clue?”

“Hang on I’ll check… Yea, there’s more-”

‘Now I know why he wouldn’t let me in that room.Earlier today father left to get something from town and wouldn’t be back for a few hours. After he left I started looking for the key, it took some time but I found it in the kitchen. I went up to the first floor and unlocked the door. It was dark so I felt along the wall for a light switch. But when I finally turned on the lights it-’

“It cuts off after that. What do you think that was about?”

“I can only guess that she found something disturbing and wasn’t happy with it. Let’s look at the other papers on the table first and then look around the room once we finish.”

“Ok, sounds like a plan.”

While looking through the rest of the papers that were on the table I suddenly felt a chill running up my spine, followed by the unmistakable sound of a child’s laughter. Oh no…

After a long while of dreaded writers block I've FINALLY managed to continue this story.
As always I hope you like it and tell me what you think.
